Riparian East, Part 2

Native Plant Species

Species of native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants currently found in the Riparian East Part 2 project area. This area extends  some 300 yards from the East edge of the House Yard to the stream entrance on the Eastern edge of the property. The stream lies to the North of a steep slope comprised of the orginal legacy forest found on the property when we acquired it in 1974. This 5-acre tract was the only forested area on the farm at that time; today, forest comprises some 45 acres of ChicoryLane. It includes Eastern Hemlock, Beach, Hophornbean, and American Hornbean or Musclewood. It  aslso includes numerous herbaceous perenials include Mayapple. Dolls Eyes, and Blacck Cohash.

By studying the particlar benefits  or ecological services (or liabilities) provided by each, we will consider enhancements that might derive from increasing or decreasong their numbers. We will also identify additional species that might be introduced that would extend these benefits/service in specific ways.

From these considerations, we will work toward a plan for making actural changes to the site, which will, in turn, lead to further observation and assessment.
